The goal of workforce management programs is to improve the productivity and effectiveness of your workforce. But too often companies think that because they have software that tracks some measure of performance like units per hour, they have a workforce management or labor management program in place. Not really.

Workforce management is a process that begins with defining the best way to perform each task and labor standards for how long each should take. Employees are then trained on the preferred methods and standards. Performance tracking is the ongoing process of measuring how well employees are following these preferred methods so additional coaching can be provided to those not meeting the standards. It also helps uncover barriers to performance like malfunctioning equipment or clogged aisles. Thus, performance tracking is part of a larger productivity process, not an end in itself.
